July is National Wart Awareness Month

About Plantar Warts

Plantar warts are the result of HPV, or human papillomavirus, getting into open wounds on the feet. They are mostly found on the heels or balls of the feet.

While plantar warts are generally harmless, those experiencing excessive pain or those suffering from diabetes or a compromised immune system require immediate medical care. Plantar warts are easily diagnosed, usually through scraping off a bit of rough skin or by getting a biopsy.

Symptoms

  • Legions on the bottom of your feet, usually rough and grainy
  • Hard or thick callused spots
  • Wart seeds, which are small clotted blood vessels that look like little black spots
  • Pain, discomfort, or tenderness of your feet when walking or standing

fungal-toenail2Dave Grohl, front man for the Foo Fighters, recently broke his ankle jumping offstage during a concert in Sweden causing the band to cancel their European tour and their headlining stint at the Glastonbury Festival.  Despite the injury and all the pain, Grohl had a throne of guitar necks, speakers, and the Foo Fighters logo set up so he could appear at their 20th anniversary concert in Washington D.C. “I’m not missing this show for the world. Build me that throne and we’ll play a Washington D.C. rock concert,” Grohl stated.

Broken Ankles
A broken ankle is experienced when a person fractures their tibia or fibula in the lower leg and ankle area. Both these bones are attached at the bottom of the leg and combine to form what we know to be our ankle.

What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of a the thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot, known as the plantar fascia, and causes mild to severe heel pain.

What are Orthotics?

fracturesKate Gabey, health teacher at Lincoln-Way North, recently completed the Boston Marathon with a stress fracture. The physical education teacher and avid runner continued her training for the marathon as she normally would when she started to feel extensive pain in her foot. “I ended up going in to see a doctor and found out it was a stress fracture,” Gabey stated. barefoot-running6According to a study conducted by Trinity College in Dublin women may benefit more from barefoot running than men and may prevent running injuries by participating in the activity. The study used 23 active females having each woman run on treadmills once barefoot and once with running shoes. Barefoot Running

Barefoot running is a fairly popular trend in the running world. More than just simply ‘running without shoes,” barefoot running affects the way your feet hit the ground and your overall posture. Barefoot runners land on the front part of their feet as opposed to those who wear shoes, who usually strike their heel as they hit the ground.

Barefoot running contains many advantages, including:

Although she was unable to walk for a few months, Molinski was treated with a new minimally invasive surgery that is often compared to knitting. Doctors would use a device to attach sutures to her tendon and pull the sutures in and out of her skin. This method additionally leaves a smaller scar compared to the large vertical scar left with traditional surgeries. Study Finds Link between Acne and RA

xrayAccording to research conducted by scientists at the Leiden University Medical Centre in Holland, rheumatoid arthritis may be triggered through a microbial infection. Researcher Diahann Jansen has stated that the study shows common bacteria in the flu virus as well as acne. “It doesn’t necessarily mean if you get acne you will get rheumatoid arthritis, but it is possible that if you encounter such a pathogen at some point your immune system will start a response to that pathogen,” stated Jansen. This new discovery is only the beginning in understanding the relationship between microbes and rheumatoid arthritis.

What Is Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disorder in which the body’s own immune system attacks the membranes surrounding the joints. Severe pain and immobility are caused by an inflammation of the lining of your joints, and in worse cases the destruction of the joint’s cartilage and bone can occur.
